whatIf? Technologies Inc. has teamed with Navigant Consulting, Canada's premier electric utility consultants, to provide an offering to help Canadian electric utilities explore future electricity markets in order to manage power planning uncertainty and investment risk using the Canadian Energy Systems Simulator (CanESS).  This offering leverages Navigant's vast experience and expertise in the energy industry with the unique features of CanESS to analyze the dynamics of electricity markets..

The electricity industry faces unprecedented uncertainty as growth in electricity has slowed or declined since the mid-1990s.  While electricity demand in Canada had been previously coupled with economic growth, today electricity demand depends on interrelated and sometimes conflicting trends in demand side management (DSM), energy efficiency regulations, renewable and distributed generation, and new end use technologies such as plugin electric vehicles.  Because each of these trends may change at different rates and in different directions, analysis of future energy demand has become too complicated for spreadsheet-based models.

Through its detailed, bottom-up model of the Canadian energy supply and demand systems and scenario and model management capability, CanESS can be used to iteratively explore and compare multiple future electricity scenarios over the long term.
